Piet Hein Eek is Dutch designer that graduated from the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven in 1990. Whilst a student, he gained wide recognition for his Scrap Wood Cupboard. The source of inspiration of the Scrap Wood Collection originates from the intrinsic beauty found in castoff materials and the possibilities of combining them. The collection focuses on contrasting appearances and colors of various timber leftovers. His work is highly distinctive with an emphasis on contemporary design and tradition while bringing attention to waste and sustainability. After the success with his first collection, he launched his own design studio in 1992.
During the subsequent year, Piet Hein Eek partnered with Nob Ruijrok, and established Eek en Rujigrok B.V. The Dutch design duo continue to operate in a 10,000 square meter space in Eindhoven which features a store, gallery, restaurant, showroom and studio.
